Monthly Donghua Rankings
Every month, we publish a fresh Top 20 ranking of the best Chinese animation worth watching. Each entry comes with specific reasoning, not vague praise.
Unlike generic "Top 10" listicles scraped from MyAnimeList scores, every ranking on ChineseAnimeTop is written by someone who has actually watched these donghua — and in most cases, read the original Chinese novels they are based on. We evaluate donghua on five weighted dimensions: international reception (how well it resonates with non-Chinese audiences), animation quality (studio execution and consistency), source material depth (the strength of the original novel), cultural significance (what it contributes to the donghua landscape), and Western-audience accessibility (how easy it is for a new viewer to jump in).
Each entry includes 2-3 sentences of specific reasoning — not "great animation" platitudes, but concrete observations about what that donghua does better than its peers. Rankings are updated monthly to reflect new seasons, completed arcs, and shifting audience reception. The archive below preserves every monthly ranking, so you can track how donghua quality evolves over time.

How the archive works
Each month gets its own archive entry. If a verified review produces no change, the update says so instead of presenting copied analysis as a new ranking.
Past rankings are archived permanently. We don't delete history — when a series falls from #2 to #15, you can see exactly when and why.
